Beth’s Crocheted Towel Topper
Materials Needed
Small amount of worsted weight yarn. Size H crochet hook. Sharp yarn needle. One decorative button with shank back. Hand towel cut in half (if printed, be sure the printed pattern is not upside down on second side). Leave the cut edges unfinished.
Rnd 1: Ch 28, being careful not to twist chain, join w/slst to first ch to form ring. Ch1. Work 1 sc in each ch around. Join w/slst to first sc.
Rnd 2: Ch. 3. DC in each sc around. Join w/slst to top of ch3.
Rnd 3: Ch1. Sc in each dc around. Join w/slst to ch1.
Now you will be working in rows.
Row 1: Flatten the tube so that your next row will start on your right. Insert your hook into the inside loops of both the front and the back of your flattened tube. You will be closing the top of the tube. Sc in each st across to close the tube. You should end up with 12 sc across. Then Ch3, turn.
Row 2: SC decrease in first sc and in last sc. SC in each other sc across. Ch.1, turn.
Row 3: Dc in each sc across. Ch 3, turn.
Row 4: Dc dec across. (Yo, insert hook in next st, yo, draw lp through, yo, draw through 2 lps on hook) 2 times, yo, draw through all 3 lps on hook. You should have half as many stitches as before. Ch 3, turn.
Row 5: Dc in 1st stitch, sk next stitch, 2dc, ch2, 2 dc in next stitch. Sk1, dc in next stitch, sc in last stitch. Ch3, turn.
Rows 6-11: Dc in next dc, 2 dc, ch2, 2dc in ch 2 space. Skip next DC. Dc in next dc. Slst in top of ch. 3. Ch3, turn. (On last row, ch1, turn.)
Row 12: Sc in each stitch across, but work 3 Scs in the ch.2 sp. Fasten off & weave in ends. Join yarn in base of row 1 on right side. Work sc all around. Join with slst to base of topper. Ch1, turn.
Row 13: Sl in each st. around. Fasten off & weave in ends.
Assembly: Gather the top cut edge of the towel with a piece of yarn threaded on your sharp yarn needle. Make your gathering stitches about ¾” apart and ¼” from the edge. Gather up so that you have a 4” top edge. Sew the topper to the top covering the cut edges. Work your stitches back and forth tacking the topper to the top edge. Repeat until it feels securely attached. Sew button where desired. The middle lace holes serve as buttonholes.
